It's All About Connection
This past year has been an exciting one for all of us at HASA. Support from our community of donors and volunteers allowed us to launch a number of new initiatives, both on our campus and in the community.
On our campus, we expanded our education programs, welcoming our very first public prekindergarten classes to HASA. The largest cohort of sign language students in our history came through our doors last year, as well. Our own meeting spaces are now more accessible to employees and guests with communication needs. Demand for our clinical services is increasing due to a greater awareness of the vital language skills needed for success in school and groundbreaking research proving that hearing health is a critical component of combating many concerns, including dementia, hypertension, and heart disease. We're ready for that growth, but we need your help.
In the community, we’ve launched the Hearing Hospitality initiative, a training program for restaurants that helps them create accessible spaces for customers who are deaf or hard of hearing. A school-based curriculum is now being launched in Baltimore City and Baltimore County to teach students about sound science and how to protect themselves from noise-induced hearing loss. In the coming months, we’ll launch a workplace inclusion program that gives employers the tools they need to improve accessibility and language access for their employees and customers. Your support is critical to the growth of these programs.
Expansion of these programs is exciting, but it comes at a cost. This year, we upgraded our security systems to keep our students and clients safe when they visit our campus. Our aging IT systems (servers, hardware, and software) were in need of critical upgrades. We have additional infrastructure needs as our campus reaches the end of its second decade. When patients come to HASA, they often don’t have the insurance coverage or funds needed to pay for speech-language therapy or hearing aids; in response, we provided more than $500,000 in charitable care to those families. These initiatives were expensive but necessary. With your donation, we can continue the forward momentum.
