#DeafSpotlight: Nyle DiMarco
Nyle DiMarco is an American model and actor who has shown that it’s not all about looks. DiMarco is Deaf and was born into a multigenerational Deaf family with over 25 Deaf members. He went to the Maryland School for the Deaf as well as Gallaudet University, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics.
DiMarco first stepped into the spotlight as the winner of America’s Next Top Model, an American reality competition show in which aspiring models compete for the title of Top Model. On America’s Next Top Model, DiMarco shined as a model, while also teaching other contestants, mentors, and viewers about his experiences as a Deaf man. Since then DiMarco has starred on shows like Switched at Birth, Difficult People, and Dancing with the Stars (which he won!).
Along with acting and modeling, DiMarco advocates for the full and equal access to bilingual (ASL and English) resources for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. DiMarco has earned praise from Gallaudet University, the National Association of Deaf, and more. He is also the celebrity spokesperson for Language Equality & Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) and started his own charitable foundation. Most recently, his foundation has helped start a program to prepare Deaf children for kindergarten.
