Funny Mishearings Inspire a Book

I have had a hearing loss (apparently since I was young). I did not recognize this until I was in my Master's Program and tested 50 folks, including my Dad. We were both diagnosed with "otosclerosis" (bone conduction hearing loss) and immediately realized that is hereditary! Both of us got two hearing aids.

Years after that I had operations to wire those tiny bones together to improve my hearing. I now wear two state-of-the-art aids that synch to my Smartphone (for control and modulation).

I wished to share my experience, both funny mishearings and my knowledge of hearing loss with others who are suspicious of a loss, wondering about seeing an audiologist, or who simply wish to know how to best communicate with someone with a serious hearing loss.

Because of that experience, I wrote: O, Kinky Turtle (I thought that was the name of the hymn, Lead On, O King Eternal), a collection of misheard stories collected from across the nations. My hope is that serves as a gentle reminder that life can indeed improve with the proper use of a hearing aid or two.

The rest of my life is spent on the south shore of Lake Superior where we hike, sail, kayak, and generally enjoy retirement among many educated adults. It is a haven. We also have a cottage on a wilderness lake in Kentucky where our son lives.

I enjoy painting, poetry, swimming in our saline pool, and doing the Polar Plunge! I am an entrepreneur (sometimes too brave) and love adventure. I joined LIONS and am their Vision Chair.

Enjoy the book, and send me any stories you wish for Volume II.
