Spring Newsletters are in the Mail
The warming weather always reminds me that summer is just around the corner. While we’re excited for all that this summer will bring, I have the unenviable job of formally announcing the retirement of Jill Berie, our Educational Director since 2002. Jill was instrumental in leading Gateway School during the move to our current campus and in expanding the breadth and scope of our educational programs. While she will be greatly missed by all of us here at HASA, we wish her an immensely gratifying retirement and the knowledge that we will continue to foster the lifelong love of learning that she instilled in hundreds of children during her tenure.
This summer, we’ll be offering several programs, both at our location and in the community. The Summer Storytime Literacy Camp is the perfect antidote to summer learning loss for young readers. Summer sign language classes start in July and offer something for beginners and advanced learners alike; we even have a sign class for babies!
We’re also starting a new hearing health education initiative - The Baltimore Soundscape Project - which will launch in September at local schools in the area. The project will provide teachers (and community group leaders) a specialized curriculum, hearing screenings, and use of a mobile website that will help them measure the noise levels of environmental sounds.
In addition to managing multiple projects, we’re also working on our newest Strategic Plan. In the coming weeks, you may receive an invitation to provide feedback to the committee in a focus group, one-on-one meeting, or by completing a survey. I hope that you’re able to participate; community input is so valuable as we work to create a guiding document that will serve HASA in the coming years.
